Become a Raider Everyone Loves
1. Meet the requirements
The minimum DPS requirements and gear requirements are listed on each general tier's page. Meeting the DPS requirements without meeting the gear requirements WOULD work, but there are some boss mechanics that will kill you if you are undergeared.
If your gear is good enough but you can't seem to meet the DPS requirements read up on your spec in one of the many guides out there. Practice and spend some time figuring out your spec/calling/soul and you will succeed!

2. Know your calling and what it's good at
You can and should play multiple roles in RIFT! It's the whole point of Rift's elaborate Class System.
Learn these, and know what fights you can play. Know your melee and ranged builds. Learn your AOE souls as well. Know your class inside and out, healing, DPS, and tank. Know your rotation inside and out, and know the abilities, their cooldown, and what they do. Don't just know your macros. In raids, you will hardly be able to stand still and run through your rotation fully. Know how to switch it up and maintain your DPS. Line up your personal cds with the raid's.
Obviously you can't achieve this over night. But a constant examination of your calling will soon make you an expert. Most specs can be learned within 30 minutes in a basic form. So rather than completing that last weekly quest of yours, spend some time learning. It will pay off once you get into raiding.

3. Stay out of stupid
Dying to a red circle is okay your first time. Dying to a red circle is not okay your third time.
When you die, you need to know why you died. "I don't know what killed me" isn't an excuse. Neither is "But... I used my/ did [something]" - obviously you didn't. You should have some type of combat log that tells you. Rift Meter is the best for this. Know why you died, and find out what you need to do to avoid it happening again next time. This also goes for cast times. Do NOT stand in red to finish a cast. Losing 2K DPS is better than losing all of it.

4. Be patient and willing to change things up
You will die. It will happen.
The higher tier raids are hard. Period. Be patient and ready to change things up if your raid leader says they think it's best. It pays off to have a good understanding of your calling. Quickly adapting to new bosses and strategies is the key to success in Rift.

5. Addons
Addons are there to make your life easier, so use them if you need them.
There are some people who can play without addons. Although there are very few in existence. Not every Addon might be for you. KBM will tell you exactly what you need to do in each boss encounter. Karuul Alerts allows you to add custom notifications on your screen for abilities, mechanics, CDs, and other things to perfect or optimze your rotation. Choco's Cooldowns allows you to track your entire raid's cooldowns, along with which ones are stacking/not stacking. Roles will let you change between specs in an instant. Rift Meter is the log parser (combat meter) of choice. Gadgets will let you customize your UI to an unbelievable extent.
There is a variety of Addons for Rift. Try them and see if you can improve your experience.

0. Be nice to people
Yeah, I'm an DPS overlord. Bow to your new master.
No need though to be a dick about it. Sure, it can be frustrating sometimes having to carry your group. But follow step 4. and maybe even offer your help to inexperienced players. It's an investment in future raids.
